She returned to her alma mater, MiraCosta, to teach Sociology and has mentored numerous interns and students. She leads students to conduct community service and engagement projects at local non-profits. Her favorite work as a professor has been with AAPI, Umoga, and Transitions (formerly incarcerated) students within MiraCosta's ASE program.

Amber Kae is motivated to run because of community concerns, including the housing crisis, environmental sustainability, diversity, and advocating for Small Business Owners.

Amber Kae's Vision

Amber Kae was raised in Oceanside. In her youth, she experienced homelessness and housing insecurity. During college, Amber Kae stayed in Oceanside with the help of low-income housing. Not all community members are as lucky. Amber Kae believes everyone, from seniors to low-income families to the next generation of lifelong Oceansiders like her children, should have affordable housing options. Amber Kae supports building affordable housing and home-buyer programs for low to middle-income residents. She fully supports protecting our mobile home parks. Once on the street, it is more difficult to get an O'Sider back on their feet. Amber Kae supports services that keep our community members sheltered.Oceanside can do more to assist with support services for our unhoused community members, such as low-barrier shelter beds, mobile showers, and safe parking lots. There is also space for Oceanside to pursue grants and outside funding for homeless outreach and emergency response teams. Amber Kae would like to see Oceanside adopt a housing first model. This practice is more compassionate for our community members and more economically effective.

Too many working O'Siders are one paycheck or rent increase away from homelessness. I was raised in Oceanside and experienced housing instability growing up. During college, low-income housing allowed me to remain in Oceanside. I support bridging the housing gap and building affordable housing for low to middle-income families looking to purchase.

Community is a top priority for Amber Kae! In 2021, Amber Kae and her neighbors successfully stopped an Amazon warehouse from being built near schools and neighborhoods. She helps them create and implement community education projects and professional development every semester. Some of these projects include a workshop series on cultural sensitivity and inclusion, and panels honoring local community members. Amber Kae is also a proud leader and committee member for the Social Justice Symposium created by her department featuring student researchers. Her passion is helping students at the start of their higher education journey. She especially enjoys mentoring students from MANA (AAPI), Umoga (African American), and Transitions (formerly incarcerated) within MiraCosta's diverse student population.&nbsp;Our current city council's representation does not reflect our diverse demographics.&nbsp;Amber Kae will be the first Black woman to serve on the city council in the history of Oceanside!&nbsp;As a mother and Black woman, Amber Kae knows the importance of representation in government.&nbsp;She is showing her children that it is possible to be the change they want to see. Amber Kae also values the deep Samoan roots within the city and aims for her co-parent and children to see the first Samoan name represented on the council.On the council,&nbsp;Amber Kae will empower ALL communities, including our seniors, veterans, working-class and low-income communities, LGBTQI+, and people with disabilities.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Amber Kae understands well-being improves with access to a healthy environment.&nbsp;Her ultimate goal is for Oceanside to be both a Blue and Green zone fostering a community that is known for both its quality of life and environmental standards. She&nbsp;uses Oceanside open spaces in her small business to promote wellness, and safeguarding them is a priority.Amber Kae advocates for diversity in our natural spaces through the non-profit Black People Who Hike.&nbsp;You can find her locally instructing yoga on the beach in South O, sailing along the coast, or hiking in Guajome Park or Calavera Preserve.Amber Kae will address climate change and protect our open spaces and beaches.&nbsp;She will guarantee Oceanside sends environmental advocates to regional boards, such as SANDAG.&nbsp;Amber Kae will collaborate with the California Coastal Commission and others to find regional and local solutions to sand replenishment.&nbsp;Additional plans on Amber Kae's agenda are Green buildings, native plant landscaping, and city-sponsored community clean-ups.

The environment has always had a special place in my heart growing up in Oceanside. I advocate for diversity in our natural spaces through the non-profit Black People Who Hike. I am a member of the Sierra Club and promise to address climate change at the local level and protect our open spaces and beaches.

Environment

Amber Kae started a small business to have a flexible schedule and income while getting through college. Nearly 15 years later, she teaches her students about the value of entrepreneurship and having multiple sources of income. Entrepreneurs and small businesses are an essential part of Oceanside's economy.&nbsp;As an entrepreneur for over a decade, Amber will be an advocate on the council for local economic development.&nbsp;Amber Kae supports incentivizing O'Siders to open small businesses. Amber Kae seeks to simplify permit processes and educate potential business owners about their options. She supports amplifying grants and programs that ease startup costs for aspiring small business owners.&nbsp;Amber Kae also encourages more women and people from diverse backgrounds to pursue entrepreneurship.In the summer of 2021, Amber Kae advocated against permitting a new Amazon facility in District 4 to the Oceanside City Council.&nbsp;She highlighted the flaws of bringing in a 24-hour operation next to a senior facility and school zone in her neighborhood. Oceanside deserves employers who pay full-time living wages because Oceansiders deserve to thrive not just survive. The council voted to not allow Amazon in District 4. It was her involvement in this process that sparked her journey to pursue a seat on the city council.

I love and support small businesses in Oceanside, especially in District 4. I am a life-long entrepreneur and teach my students the importance of having multiple streams of income. On the council, I will give small business owners (from street vendors to brick-and-mortar) an advocate on the city council.

May is Military Appreciation Month and Mental Health Awareness Month. This month also honors veterans who served and lost their lives with Memorial Day.&nbsp;Recovering from the burdens of war is a burden that is sometimes more than any one individual can bear and suicide can feel like the only relief. As many as 22 veterans commit suicide per day. The loss of life of these warriors once they have returned home, does not diminish their sacrifice made for the love of our nation.
